Grooming the Chinese Crested Hairless Dog

I am using my very skinny female, Maddy, in the picture demonstration because you can see her bones very well so it is easy to demonstrate. I know that it looks like she is starved but she has been to the vet and had every kind of test run. They assure me that she is healthy as a horse and that she just has a very high metabolism. As she matures, she will start to put on weight. In the mean time, we feed her very high fat food to try to keep weight on.

Dove Sensitive Skin Fragrance Free Bar Soap (I use this on my hair too because I am chemical sensitive and allergic to many things including shampoo. My hair is extremely healthy.)

Either: Alba very emollient body lotion unscented (this is organic) or Lubriderm Seriously Sensitive fragrance free lotion (to condition hair but NOT on show day)

Comb

Human hair brush with wire teeth

Sharp hair cutting scissors

Oster finisher/trimmer

Aloe Vera Gel (I use unscented from Whole Foods Store)

Braun electric razor (NOT the three head)

Grooming table

Garbage can to keep hair off table

Nail clippers (I use the ones made for humans so I can see better and don’t cut to deep)

Nail file or emery board

Step 1:

I always wash the dog first. I use my kitchen sink with the spray nozzle which works very well. I use the Dove Sensitive Skin Fragrance Free Bar soap as shampoo. Since it is fragrance free with no strong chemicals in it, there is never any irritation and the skin and hair stays very nice and healthy. Scrub the dog very well either once or twice depending on how dirty it is. Towel dry and reward her with a treat and quick run around the house for standing still for her bath. If you think that the hair needs conditioning (but never on show day!), put a small amount of Lubriderm unscented lotion listed above in you hand and rub between hands. Then rub into the ends of hair that needs moisture or detangling. Brush your dog with the human brush with metal teeth. This works very well and does not hurt as much as some other brushes. You can then comb the hair.

First I will show you a few pictures of Maddy with about 6 months hair growth. I would consider her a medium hairy hairless.

Paso 1:

Lavo siempre el perro primero. Utilizo mi fregadero de la cocina con el inyector de aerosol que trabaja muy bien. Utilizo el jabón de barra sin perfume de la piel sensible de la paloma como champú. Puesto que es sin perfume sin los productos químicos fuertes en él, nunca hay cualquier irritación y la piel y el pelo permanece muy agradables y sanos. Step 2:

Place the dog on the grooming table and keep her standing. I usually start with the face to get it out of the way. I start with the Oster finisher/trimmer which gives a very close cut and is very quiet. I only use the Braun razor on show days to catch any stubble. I shave against the hair growth direction to get a closer shave with the Oster finisher/trimmer. Follow the pattern on the following pictures.

When the face is done, she gets a treat on the table and then a quick run around the house as reward for standing nicely. She also gets a great deal of praise when she stands nicely which makes grooming very easy after the first time or two.

Step 3:

Place her back on the table and pull the hair forward from the withers bone.

The bones that the arrow points to in the above area is the withers.

In the above picture, my finger is on top of the withers so as you can see, you shave to a little bit behind the back of the withers. Once you have that line, continue to shave back and sides of torso including upper portion of back legs.

Step 4:

The next thing I do is the shoulders. Here are before and after photos.

Step 5:

I then go to the neck. Following is a picture of her neck before shaving.

Repeat on the other side to establish the neck line. You want as much as you can to be left to make the hair fuller. The line is probably halfway on the neck if you look closely in this picture. I also shave the under side of the neck after I establish the neck line.

Step 6:

Now it is time for the tail and the backside… their least favorite area. I shave the tail as shown in the following pictures.

When I get to the back side where the anise is, I put my thumb over the hole to protect from getting nicked (if she jumps) and I shave right up to my thumb moving my thumb as needed to reveal hair while still protecting this sensitive area. Also remove most hair from vaginal area (leave just a little tail at the end to help urine flow) or the testicle area. These are also very sensitive so be very careful in these areas. I often pull one of the back legs out to the side and shave the inside of the other leg and the testicle or vaginal area then repeat from other side. Give your dog a treat on the table and let her run around for alittle while to get rid of some stress caused by shaving this sensitive area!

Step 7:

On to the back legs… I use a thumb width plus alittle from the bone as shown in the following pictures.

This picture shows my thumb above the back leg reference joint. You would start your shave point at about ½ to ¾ inch above the top part of the thumb… whatever looks right. Repeat the same way on the other back leg.

Step 8:

The next step is the front legs. I don’t use the thumb reference on the front legs. I just eyeball it to look something like this.

I then lift one of the front legs out to the side and shave the inside of other leg, visible chest and armpit. Be very careful in the armpit area… this is also very sensitive. It is better to leave some short hairs than to nick your dog in this area. Shave the tummy and chest. Lift your dog as shown in the following picture to reveal unshaved areas.

Entonces saco una de las piernas delanteras al lado y afeito el interior de la otra pierna, pecho visible y axila. Tener muy cuidado en el área de la axila… que esto es también muy sensible. Step 9:

Let your dog run around for awhile and relax a bit. Then it is time for nail clipping. Carefully clip the nails then file the rough edges. Place the dog back on the table and comb the hair on the feet. Trim the hair with the scissors straight across in front even with the end of the toe nails. Also, either with scissors or clipper (I prefer clipper), remove hair from bottom pads of feet.

Paso 9:

Dejar tu perro funcionar alrededor para un rato y relajar un pedacito. Entonces es hora para el truncamiento del clavo. Acortar cuidadosamente los clavos entonces archivan los bordes ásperos. Now, if it is show day, I use the Braun electric razor to remove stubble from noticeable areas. You want your dog’s back to be smooth as a babies butt (lol) when the judge goes over her.

After shaving or using razor, I apply aloe gel to prevent irritation. Give her a treat and much love. YEAH! YOU ARE DONE!

Ahora, si es día de la demostración, utilizo la maquinilla de afeitar eléctrica de Braun para quitar el stubble de áreas sensibles. Deseas tu perro de nuevo a seas liso mientras que los bebés empalman (lol) cuando el juez pasa ella. Después de afeitar o de usar la maquinilla de afeitar, aplico el gel del áloe para prevenir la irritación. Darte un convite y mucho amor. ¡SÍ! ¡TE HACEN!
